#‎Maari‬ review by Common Man:
Maari – Dhanush as “Kaali” impressed a lot with ‘’Danga Maari” song few months back. He is now back again as ‘’Maari” (Thara Local guy) speaking Madras accent in his own style, looks & attitude. Trailer created good expectations for the movie & reached 3 million views within short span of time. It helped the movie to get excellent opening with tremendous reservations for the first 3 days. At the same time, Director Balaji Mohan fans were little unhappy after seeing the trailer, as they were expecting class movies like Kadhalil Sodhappavadhu Yeppadi & VaayaI Moodi Pesavavum from him. Let us see whether he manages to satisfy Dhanush Fans & Common Man with his Mass commercial entertainer in this review.
Story: It is the usual Cat & Mouse game between Local Rowdy ‘’Dhanush’’ & Sub-Inspector “Vijay Yesudas”
Dhanush- He rocks as Thara local guy throughout the movie with ease. He is one of the few actors who can impress the audience in both class & mass movies. His Screen Presence is a big plus & director has utilized it completely without bothering about the script & screenplay.
Kajal Aggarwal – She runs a boutique, but unfortunately appears with the same costumes in most of the scenes. Her characterization changes in each & every scene.
Vijay Yesudas – Yesudas’s son & playback singer makes his debut in Tamil Cinema. To be frank, he doesn’t fit the role completely. This characterization required an experienced & villainous-look actor, while he looks like software engineer in police costumes.
Robo Shankar – He gave wonderful performance in Balaji Mohan’s ‘’VMP” & continues his form in this movie too. He rocks with wonderful timing dialogues & extra-ordinary body language throughout the movie.
Music Director Anirudh – Magical Combo of Dhanush & Anirudh joins together for the third time after ‘’3’’ & ‘’VIP”, but couldn’t deliver it as they used to. Anirudh’s cameo was completely unwarranted in the movie. His BGM was quite good in build-up scenes.
Cinematographer Om Prakash – Movie happens at only few locations & he has captured it quite well.
Editor Nithin Arun – Though movie runs for just 2 hours & 17 minutes, second half looked too dragging with usual scenes.
Director Balaji Mohan – He has given good, class movies such as ‘’KSY’’ & ‘’VMP’’. But, now he has tried to give a complete Mass movie, believing on Dhanush’s screen presence alone. First 15 – 20 minutes of the minutes establishing Dhanush’s characterization was quite good. But, after that he has used indigestible number of build-up scenes, which will satisfy only the hardcore Dhanush fans alone in the first half. It would have been justified if he has good plot in the second half, but unfortunately, he continues with only scenes which are played to the gallery. There is absolutely no story in the movie & scenes were similar to the ones which we are seeing for decades. He is a wonderful director & his fans would expect yet another ‘’Class’’ movie from him.
Overall, Maari will satisfy only Hardcore Dhanush fans ALONE.
First Half – 2.5 / 5 & Second Half – 2 / 5
Rating of this movie by Common Man – 2.25 / 5
Rating of this movie for hardcore Dhanush fans – 2.75 / 5
